ABSTRACT
The article provides information on the operations and performance of Hindustan Lever (HLL), the Indian joint venture of European company Unilever in India. For 75 years HLL, owned 51% by its Anglo-Dutch parent and affiliates, has been synonymous with consumer marketing in India. HLL pared its portfolio to 35 brands from 110, strongly influenced by Unilever, which itself spent time slashing hundreds of food and personal care products. At the parent the move improved margins, but sales slipped. In India both sales and profitability suffered.
