ABSTRACT
The article discusses the significance of contests to society. In 1829 the proprietors of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in Great Britain held a contest to determine whether horses or locomotives could better transport industrial revolution goods. In 1919 a pair of £10,000 prizes were awarded to airplane pilots. One was for crossing the Atlantic Ocean, awarded by the London Daily Mail.
