ABSTRACT
The article discusses issues related to pension plans in the U.S. The possibility that the pension plans of the bankrupt Delta and Northwest airlines and auto parts maker Delphi will be dumped onto the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. for bailout underscores the need for drastic reform. Ultimately, defined-benefit pension plans should wither away and be replaced by defined-contribution plans.
