ABSTRACT
A photograph of Coney Island (Brooklyn, New York) from the 1950's is featured. Approximately 1.3 million people are pictured on the shores of the popular retreat. The name Coney Island may be derived from the Dutch word for "rabbit" because in the 17th century when the Dutch explored the area, the island was known as "Conyne Eylandt" ("Rabbit Island").
