ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the U.S. Navy's ballistic-missile defense (BMD) program. The new program, designated BMD 3.6 and developed by Lockheed Martin Corp.'s Maritime Systems & Sensors, long-time prime contractor for the Aegis combat system, is the latest step toward a fully mature sea-based ballistic-missile defense capability. The Missile Defense Agency, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon are working toward a critical test launch in mid-summer that will prove the capability of the newest ballistic-missile defense computer program, aiming at full certification and fielding to Ticonderoga-class Aegis cruisers and Arleigh Burke-class Aegis destroyers.
