The article reports on the increasing number of methanol producers that are interested in the coal gasification route for methanol production. According to Mike Herz, Methanex Asia-Pacific director marketing and logistics, the interest is apparent in coal-rich regions like China. But challenges remain in developing and reaping the benefits from coal-based projects, the main one being the distance between the coal-rich regions and those where methanol is consumed.
