ABSTRACT
The article reports on the financial performance of Japanese chemical companies in the first quarter of 2006. Sumitomo Chemical posted record operating profits in the year ended March 2006, led by its key pharmaceuticals, information technology (IT)-related chemicals, as well as petrochemical and plastics businesses. Dainippon Ink & Chemicals posted a 2.8% rise in operating profit in 2005, spurred by higher domestic demand. Mitsui Chemicals' operating profit slumped by 27% in the year ended March 2006, due to its key petrochemicals and basic chemicals businesses.
