The article recounts the author's weekend retreat in Hamilton, New Zealand. He and his partner wanted a nature trip somewhere north of Hamilton. They found a big hillside covered with volcanic boulders that can hardly be considered productive grassland. They believe that a retreat is a place where they could be comfortable that the land was being nurtured.
