ABSTRACT
The article presents updates on the chemical industry as of May 2006. ICI has struggled for years with a significant chemicals legacy and lackluster performance. Chief executive John McAdam and his team's focus on performance improvement and shareholder value have begun to bear fruit. The renewed confidence of BASF in 2006 rests squarely on higher priced oil and the first quarter gas performance, but the company is also benefiting from stronger chemicals and polymer demand.
