Power management chip extends battery life

The article reports that Texas Instruments Inc. has introduced a buck-boost power management integrated circuit that would help in extending battery life while providing a power supply platform for multimedia devices powered by two-cell and three-cell batteries. According to the company, the TPS63000 DC/DC buck-boost converter can deliver up to 96% efficiency over an input voltage range of 1.8 to 5.5 volt, while generating an output current up to 1.2 ampere. The company stresses that the output currents for the chip can go as high as 1200 milliampere while using a single cell Li-Polymer or Li-Ion battery or can be discharged down to 2.5 volt or lower. Application possibilities include portable audio players, pocket computers, digital still cameras, cellular phones, smart phones, personal medical products, and products incorporating white LEDs. The buck-boost power management is based on a fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulation controller.
