The article reports that until recently for applications, which requires audio, video, or baseband signal, processing to function together one simply looked around to determine which discrete fixed-point (DSP) best met the needs. But now one has a choice of fixed and floating-point programmable DSPs with a wide range of architectures, both fixed and programmable. This includes general-purpose processors with DSP capabilities; embedded cores with DSP extensions: fixed-function DSPs for specific applications; FPGAs running massively parallel DSP functions: and different permutations of almost all of these. According to Forward Concepts Inc. worldwide shipments of all DSP-centric chips totaled an estimated $22 billion in 2005. Of this number, traditional general-purpose programmable DSPs market is dominated by Texas Instruments Inc., Freescale Semiconductor Inc., Analog Devices Inc. and Agere Systems Inc. The largest market for DSPs is wireless (39.9%), it is followed by consumer (27.0%) and computing (15.6%).
