ABSTRACT
The article cites significant examples of street demonstrations that occurred in China in 2005. Several villagers in Dongzhou protested the government land seizures for a power plant project in December. Peasants in Weinan demanded payment of relief money for the 2003 Wei River floods and return of farmland that belonged to their ancestors before the construction of the Sanmenxia dam in October. A massive riot broke out in Zhejiang Province, after 5 years of petitioning failed to close toxic chemical plants there.
