ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the plan of Fubon, a Taiwanese holding company co-owned by Daniel Tsai, to buy a minority stake in a Chinese regional bank through its Hong Kong subsidiary Fubon Bank. Fubon's acquisition of International Bank of Asia for almost $100 million in 2004 paved way for its entry into the mainland market from Hong Kong, China. Tsai sees prospects for wealth management business and aims to increase underwriting of Taiwan-invested companies with China operations. According to Tsai, the biggest challenge before a final deal is signed is one with joint supervision among Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
