ABSTRACT
The article focuses on businessman Keiichi Kikuchi and his use of cross-merchandising for his bookstore chain Village Vanguard in Japan. Kikuchi sells CDs, pictures, figurines and other paraphernalia by linking them to the specialty books on the store shelves. Cross-merchandising is an old retailing technique in the U.S., but somewhat foreign to Japan. As of January 2006, Village has opened three restaurants in Tokyo, completely unconnected with the bookstores.
