ABSTRACT
The article deals with the problems experienced by German firm Degussa as of May 2006. Degussa was founded in 1873 as a gold and silver refinery in far-removed Frankfurt and has been caught in Ruhr area politics since 1997, when energy giant Veba acquired a majority stake and merged Degussa with its other chemicals subsidiary, Hüls. Years of restructuring and being a pawn for industrial-political interest have left Degussa's workforce confused about its identity. As the chemicals sector moves forward, important decision about Degussa's future must be made.
