This article explains how the study of elementary physical education specialists was undertaken. There had been interest in how elementary specialists in physical education persisted in effective programming and teaching despite isolation and burnout. In addition two of the new faculty members wished to do collaborative research and there was interest in adding a second year research requirement in the doctoral program in pedagogy. A senior undergraduate planning an honor's thesis joined the team studying elementary physical education.
