This article discusses the content of this issue of the "Journal of Teaching in Physical Education." The author acknowledges the contributions of Mike Metzler as he completes his editorship of the Journal. Bart Crum's article discusses research on teaching in North America and Europe, particularly West Germany. An article by David Kirk looks at an inquiry-oriented approach to teacher education which places less emphasis on the technical and instrumental aspects of teaching, and greater emphasis on developing critical capacities of prospective teachers.
