ABSTRACT
This article reports that tunneling on the $898-million, six-mile Gold Line light-rail extension to east Los Angeles kicked off in February. A joint venture of Traylor Brothers Inc./Frontier Kemper Constructors has the $130-million tunneling subcontract under a $600-million design-build contract held by Eastside LRT Constructors, a joint venture led by Washington Group International, Obayashi Corp. and Shimmick Construction Corp. Twin pressure-face TBMs with closed cutter faces are excavating 21-ft-dia passages about 80 ft deep through alluvium. Richard Thorpe, chief capital management officer for Metro says that the extension to be opend in 2009, is spurring transit-oriented development.
