ABSTRACT
This article presents information on how an apology for medical errors can create problems for physicians. In an adverse event, many people are involved and what seems like an apology to one person can seem like passing the blame to another. When a patient is still struggling to know what happened, an early apology can become an unfortunate apology. Health care lawyer David Florin tells about a case wherein the doctor realized that a sponge was left in the patient's body after surgery. He came out and said that the nurses didn't count and he was sorry. The nurses were angry at him and they started testifying about what a horrible doctor he was.
