ABSTRACT
The article comments on an article about increased numbers of circulatory vascular endothelial cells in patients on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) by Franz-Xaver Schmid and colleagues published within the issue. The interesting observation discussed by Schmid and his colleagues relates to the possibility that CPB may induce significant injury to the endothelial cell layer, resulting in either increased loss or turnover, with the consequent increase in the numbers of circulating endothelial cells. The author comments on the need to consider the possibility that endothelial progenitor cells may be released during CPB.
