Autonomous mobile robots point the way to safer vehicles

The article reports on the use of autonomous mobile robots. Compared to Sony's robot dog, AIBO, most of technology needed for an autonomous mobile robot is utilized. It includes automated motion systems, voice, image and pattern recognition, a software for analyzing behavior, makes decisions based on results and learn from it to interact, it only lacks GPS. Stanley, designed by the Stanford Racing Team that won in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, is one of the most sophisticated autonomous mobile robot. It has laser range finders, radar systems, GPS, emergency stop systems and runs on six Pentium M blade servers. The purpose of the challenge is to foster the development of autonomous vehicle technology that may soon save lives on the freeways.
