The article focuses on the increasing competition prevailing among the retail stores in the rural areas. In rural areas, competition is creeping in from other retail channels such as dollar stores, drugstores, supermarkets and mass merchandisers. Smaller independent grocers are also moving into these communities because of fierce competition from the majors in the more populated locations. While there are still more convenience stores located in urban areas, the store count in rural areas is growing faster. As per the data released by TDLinx, between February 2004 and February 2006, the number of rural c-stores increased by 9.84 percent compared to the number of urban stores, which increased 8.13 percent.
