This article presents information about the Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). IMS is designed to run multiple applications and protocols. It can use multiple access technologies including traditional TDM, WiFi and WiMAX. According to Lior Weiss, vice president of AudioCodes' media gateway business line, IMS combines Internet principles with those of third generation cellular services. IMS also helps service providers in deploying new services. Industry experts believe that IMS will play a role in cable's feature with the coming release of PacketCable 2.0 specification.
