The article presents an economic analysis of major dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) architectures that can be used to provide additional bandwidth. They include the Point-to-Point Mux/Demux DWDM, Fixed-OADM and Reconfigurable-OADM architectures. In fixed OADM DWDM architecture, only the specific channels destined for particular sites are selected and dropped. Reconfigurable-OADM has software-configurable wavelength add-drop functionality.

A phase-compensation scheme is proposed and demonstrated to overcome the intrinsic tradeoff between the dispersion and the bandwidth of a volume grating. Its application to a volume grating-based dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) device is explored. A DWDM device is fabricated by...

In this paper, we study multi-fiber optical networks with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). We extend the definition of the well-known Wavelength Assignment Problem (WAP) to the case of k fibers per link and w wavelengths per fiber, generalization that we will call (k,w)-WAP. We develop a...

  • Availability analysis and comparison of different WDM systems. Rados, Ivan // Journal of Telecommunications & Information Technology;2007, Vol. 2007 Issue 2, p114

We begin reasons why high system availability is important. Furthermore, the basic terms are introduced pertaining to the availability with particular review of the parallel structure. Then the availability of different wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems is analysed: point to point,...

  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing.  // Network Dictionary;2007, p522

A definition of the term "Wavelength Division Multiplexing" (WDM) is presented. It refers to a technology that uses optical signals on different wavelengths to increase the capacity of fiber optic networks in order to handle a number of services simultaneously. The conversion modules of WDM have...
