The article relates the experience of eight-year-old Jawan Torregano when Hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005. Jawan and her family are back in New Orleans after several months of being away. She and her parents, grandparents, and 3-year-old brother left New Orleans just before the hurricane arrived. Jawan used to attend Lake Forest Montessori School, but it was damaged in the hurricane. INSET: Notes on New Orleans.
