ABSTRACT
The article provides background information on the 1972 Munich, Germany, Olympics massacre in which Palestinian terrorists murdered two members of the Israeli Olympic contingent at the Munich Olympic Village and took nine others hostage in an effort to force the release of Palestinians held prisoner in Israel. Taken hostage were Yossef Gutfreund, David Berger, Ze'ev Friedman, Eliezer Halfin, Amitzur Shapira, Kehat Shorr, Mark Slavin, Andre Spitzer, and Yacov Springer. All the Israeli hostages were killed in a gun battle between their captors and German police. The attack was blamed on Black September, a terrorist organization. Allegations were later made that the Israeli government ordered secret agents to track down and kill Palestinians judged responsible for the Olympic attacks.
