ABSTRACT

The article discusses the offshore oil drilling industry's explorations into ultra-deepwater arena where rigs have to drill deeper and more challenging wells, which results into higher failure rates for top-drives. To date, the deepest offshore wells constructed have been about 35,000 feet in total depth, but may reach as deep as 50,000 feet in the future. Mike Hall, vice president of Engineering and Technical Services in Transocean, states that the new top-drive design has improvements such as redundancy of operation-critical components, capacity for increases in drilling load requirements and modularization to make quick repairs.
