ABSTRACT
This article reports on an agreement between industrial gases producers BOC and Linde that will create the leading player in the global market, alongside Air Liquide of France, as of March 2006. Formally, Linde is acquiring BOC, but privately the groups see the deal as a merger of equals. To finance the takeover, the German group will sell its material handling business and will increase equity. The two gases players have cooperated for some time. In a U.S.-based joint venture, Linde builds air separation plants for BOC customers worldwide. INSET: THE GAS MARKET MOVERS.
