This article presents tips on handling antique quilts. With proper handling and storage, embrittlement or fiber breakage caused by fluctuating temperature and humidity, pollution, sunlight and soil can be postponed or avoided for decades. Do not wash a quilt if it has inked signatures, an unstable dye, deteriorated fabrics or glazed, woolen or silk fabrics. Most quilt historians suggest not laundering quilts made before 1900.
