The article reflects on the history and challenges of memory architectures for portable devices. Memory architectures were developed mostly for computers where the primary consideration was speed, followed by cost and power. The advent of personal computers in the '80s and '90s triggered the production of DRAM but the entry of cell phones in the late '90s mellowed down DRAM's effectivity because it is too power-hungry. This leads to the entry of low-power DRAM (LPDRAM) which incorporates partial-array refresh, power-down modes and a variety of other innovations. The biggest challenge for cell phones is embedding nonvolatile memory wherein computer companies like IBM, Freescale, Toshiba, Samsung and Sony are all working on.
