Chromosome counts of the following species were done: Costus pictus, C. scaber and C. pulverulentus all have 2n = 18; Costus dirzoi 2n = 27, 28; Calathea ovandensis 2n = 25; Maranta gibba 2n = 40 and Stromanthe macrochlamys 2n = ca. 60, ca. 63. Observations on Costus lead us to consider the probable existence of a polyploid series, with the recently described C. dirzoi being triploid.

The combination of GC and GC/MS analysis of the essential oil obtained from the rhizome of Zingiber roseum Rosc. revealed the presence of over 44 compounds of which 36 compounds have been identified comprising 94.9% of the oil. The oil was found to be rich in linalool (53.3%) with lesser amounts...

We present new comparative morphological and ontogenetic data on flowers and bulbils of Globba (Zingiberaceae) to clarify their homologies. Globba flowers are characteristically Zingiberaceous, possessing a single stamen and epigynous (``supragynopleural'') nectaries, but are unusual as the...

Chemical constituents of rhizomes of Alpinia oxymitra (Zingiberaceae) were investigated. Using chromatographic techniques, two known flavonoids, epicatechin and galloepicatechin, were isolated together with a new calamenene sesquiterpene, (-)-(1R,4S)-8-hydroxy-13-calamenenoic acid. Structure...
