ABSTRACT
The article discusses the pathogenesis of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). Immunohistochemical staining for B and T lymphocytes was performed on spinal cord sections from 17 horses which were all positive for Sarcocystis neurona. Fifteen of the 17 horses were killed due to neurologic dysfunction. Two of the horses were killed because of fractures. The article reports on the discovery of a significantly greater number of T cells in sections from S. neurona-infected versus control horses.
