The article discusses the involvement of youngsters in Buffalo, New York in firsthand community planning. The 2006 Public Education Award was given to The Amherst and Clarence Youth Planning Project. The program encourages youth to participate in any comprehensive planning in their own towns. The students focused on particular houses and survey lines, and then researched tax rolls by using the Youth Map Machine. By using geographic information systems (GIS), students of Buffalo, New York will be knowledgeable in town planning and studying, and will see the relationships between two communities in terms of floodplains, hydrology, wetlands and land-use relationships.
