ABSTRACT
The article reports on the appointment of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the U.S. Supreme Court. Alito replaces Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who has retired. When a Justice retires or dies, the president nominates a new Justice. Justice Alito is the 110th Justice to serve on the Supreme Court since it was formed in 1789.
