ABSTRACT
This article discusses layoffs and the outsourcing of some of Washington Mutual Inc.'s (Wamu) jobs. Wamu spokesman Timothy J. McGarry said the main target of the latest round of job cuts is the occupancy costs of its home loan business. Wamu should have 3,000 jobs offshore by yearend and up to 6,000 a year later. Francesco Paola of WNS-Trinity Mortgage Services, said home lenders' interest in offshoring has surged in the past two months as worries about the industry's future have overcome their "phobia" about moving jobs abroad.
