The article presents information on the flourishing ice cream industry in the U.S. Supermarkets and mass merchandisers racked up shares of 71.6 percent and 11.1 percent respectively, but that came primarily from planned shopping excursions. According to the marketing vice president of Plaid Pantries Inc., Tim Cote, the competitive nature of the ice cream category presents a great opportunity. Reportedly, the past three years his ice cream sales have gone up between 3 and 4 percent annually, and retailers are expecting the same for 2006.
