The article cites a case of a 68-year-old woman who was diagnosed of acromegaly with normal insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels. The woman presented with acute pansinusitis and sepsis. The physicians suspected it was an agromegaly. However, the serum IGF-I and IGF-I binding protein 3 levels were normal. IGF-1 measurement is considered as the current algorithms for diagnosing agromegaly. An oral glucose tolerance test is recommended for this case.

Objective: Patients with acromegaly exhibit reduced life expectancy and increased prevalence of age-related diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. However, the underlying mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Telomere shortening is reportedly associated with...

We have examined the expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), IGF binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1), and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in the rat distal nephron during increased cell work load and hypertrophy, induced by the diuretic, furosemide. Furosemide was given for six days to...

To determine whether IGF-I Ea, MGF, and myostatin mRNAs are related to GH-independent overload-induced muscle growth, we examined the expressions of IGF-I Ea and MGF mRNAs in the plantaris muscle after compensatory overload in hypophysectomized rats. The muscles were divided into four groups:...

Purpose: Acromegaly is a chronic condition resulting from a growth hormone-secreting pituitary tumor that can substantially impact patients' physical and emotional well-being. We sought to understand the impact of acromegaly on disease-related concerns and treatment choices from the patient...

An encyclopedia entry for "acromegaly" is presented. It refers to a disease characterized by abnormal enlargement of the jaw, the hands and feet, the skull, and also of the internal organs. The disease is caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary gland at the...

Mitochondrial gene mutations lead to mitochondrial diabetes with defects of insulin secretion and sensitivity. Previous studies have suggested that insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and its binding proteins (IGFBPs) have a pathogenetic role in idiopathic osteoporosis. To investigate this question further we compared 20 men with idiopathic osteoporosis with 12 healthy, age-matched men regarding growth...
