The article discusses how the Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue Department overcome the problem of slow response times due to gated or restricted- access communities of the island. The representatives from the department met with plantation developers and property managers to explain the risk of delays caused by single-access gating. Both groups have agreed to create one or more emergency unit-only access roads with gates around the perimeter of the development.
