The article focuses on the history of floor coverings. Carpet or rug weaving is depicted in an Egyptian New Kingdom tomb painting. The floor mosaics of historical Mediterranean cultures, with their decorative and narrative depictions, suggest the possibility of movable floor covering. The earliest true knotted carpet known is a 6 X 6.5 foot fragment from a Scythian tomb at Pazyryk in the Altai Mountains in Siberia.
