ABSTRACT
This article reports that lawyers have warned of a potential pensions misselling scandal within the financial services industry following the government's role in preventing residential property from attracting the tax perks of pensions. The firm Maclay Murray & Spens' pensions partner Gary Cullen cautioned financial advisers that they could face legal action if they did not warn their clients that the rules governing the tax advantages of self-invested personal pensions (Sipp) were not concrete. The Great Britain Department of Treasury announced last week that residential properties purchased through a Sipp would not attract any tax relief.
