ABSTRACT
The article discusses the performance of five IP-PBX systems designed to support more than 1,000 IP stations in typical deployments. The OmniPCX Enterprise from Alcatel SA uses a special new software that expands the system's capacity from 5,000 to 15,000 IP stations. Alcatel claims that the system can handle 150,000 busy-hour calls, sufficient for its new high user capacity. The Communications Manager Software beta-version 3.1 from Avaya Inc., features the S8720 Media Server supporting up to 12,000 IP stations, the G650 gateway, and applications including Meeting Exchange and multimedia desktop. Avaya's advanced applications range from desktop utilities to the totally separate, high-end Meeting Exchange package, which provides Web collaboration and conferencing. The ShorTel 6 package from ShorTel is capable of supporting up to 10,000 total ports. The HiPath 4000 system version 3.0 from Siemens supports up to 12,000 combined IP stations and trunk channels. 3Com Corp. provides the new release 7 of its VCX IP Telephony system, a key component of the vendor's 3Com Convergence Application Suite.
