Hyperlexia-Specific Word Recognition Skills in Young Children

The article discusses the concept of hyperlexia, the continuum of word recognition abilities which may exist separately from general verbal functioning. There is an increasing number of school children who are subject to stressful situation in school because their skill to identify words is higher than their ability to comprehend and integrate them. The reason for this specific quality is quite hard to identify. An examination of more than 20 cases revealed that hyperlexic children ranged in intellectual functioning from mentally defective to bright normal. In each case, the child's ability to recognize words was significantly higher than either his ability to comprehend the material or his evaluated verbal functioning.
