ABSTRACT
The article announces awards given to the U.S. states for redevelopment of the historic sites and city planning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Denver Urban Renewal Authority with an Overall Excellence in Smart Growth Award. Built according to the Colorado Building Program standards, the community consists of 90,000 square feet of office and retail space and 306 single-family houses, town houses, market-rate and affordable senior apartments. In 1998, the city approved the rezoning of the site to Planned Unit Development where today stands the 27-acre mixed use, mixed income development Highlands Garden Village. The other EPA award winners include the Lakewood Reinvestment Authority, which received the award for the redevelopment of a declining shopping mall, the Pasadena Planning and Department was given the award for its Central District specific Plan and Digest Guidelines and for Military Bases Redevelopment, Orlando, Florida has also received the prize.
