ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the performance of the legal department of Motorola Inc. The company had a difficult period around 2000, but since then it has bounced back. The Chicago-based company underwent a corporate restructure which resulted in a more streamlined approach to the business, and the team of lawyers was sliced to half. Even though the Motorola posted its best-ever third-quarter results in 2005, the legal department's expenditure has remained the same as it was during those belt-tightening days. Peter Lawson, the Global general counsel for Motorola, said that they negotiated very heavily to get fee discounts.
