ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the Compensation Bill passed by the British Government. There has been rejoicing from the respectable end of the claimant personal injury market that the Government is finally clamping down on the unregulated claims management industry, which has proved to be so disastrous since legal aid was withdrawn from accident claims. Under the bill, claims companies will be required to be authorized by a regulator and will require to comply with rules and a code of practice. According to Neil McLaughlin, vice-president of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers, the regulation, to be effective across such a disparate industry, has to cover everyone, from the solicitor on the high street to the legal expenses insurer to the trade union and beyond.
