When Good Mergers Go Bad

The article reflects on the failure rate of mergers in the sporting goods industry in the U.S. For the sporting goods industry, the poster child of botched mergers seems to be Benetton's ambitious attempt in the late 1980s to create a sporting goods powerhouse. Just For Feet ended up being bankrupt after failing to absorb a bunch of smaller mall-based stores. Kenneth Berliner of Peter J. Solomon Co., a Manhattan-based investment banking firm active in the retail space, believes a core strategy for buyers is not to overpay partly because of the many problems that crop up in mergers.
