ABSTRACT
The author comments on U.S. President George W. Bush's 2006 State of the Union Address. Bush issued his annual call for tax cuts, even though the country has big deficits and a sluggish economy. Bush's energy independence initiative amounted to a reshuffling of programs that already exist, or reinstating those cut in previous years. At least one of his proposals, reducing America's dependence on Middle Eastern oil by 2025, resulted in a retreat. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman retracted Bush's promise the following day. There were ways Bush could have broken new ground while staying true to his values, but he seemed tired and defensive. His speech was dispiriting for both parties.
