The article focuses on the impact of basketball player Magic Johnson's announcement of being HIV positive on adolescents in the U.S. Johnson's announcement has raised awareness among teenagers of the dangers of heterosexual sex. They are becoming more concerned about HIV infections and are willing to interact with infected individuals. Magic, in his announcement, emphasized repeatedly that he was HIV-positive but did not have AIDS and did not feel ill. Adolescents appeared to derive different lessons from his story and encountered different reactions to it from parents, teachers, and friends that may have modulated their own responses. However, Johnson's announcement does not appear to be strong enough to finally convinced young people that they might get infected by it. It is expected that Magic Johnson's continuing efforts to educate youth about AIDS can help to reduce rates of infection, particularly among the young black males. It remains the case that coverage of AIDS by the media and AIDS public service announcements can make an important contribution to AIDS education.
