ABSTRACT
This article focuses on a study conducted to examine the efficacy of vena cava filters in reducing long-term risk for pulmonary embolism (PE) in proximal deep venous thrombosis (DVT). 400 patients more than 18 years in age who had objectively confirmed proximal DVT and were at risk for PE were studied. The rate of PE was lower in the filter group than in the no-filter group. However, the rate of symptomatic recurrent DVT was greater in the filter group than in the no-filter group. Groups did not differ for any other outcomes.
