This article focuses on a clinical study which showed that in patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis B, oral drug adefovir should not be stopped after 1 year of treatment. As previously shown with lamivudine, the high therapeutic benefit achieved with adefovir, in terms of the number of patients with undetectable hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA and normal ALT, disappeared after discontinuation of treatment. Even with a low emergence of resistance mutations, the decision to treat with adefovir means nonstop therapy for many years to avoid viral rebound after withdrawal of treatment. The study compared lamivudine alone or the combination in patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B. At the end of the 48-week treatment period, HBV DNA levels were lower in the 2 groups of patients who received lamivudine.

An isoleucine-to-valine change at position 233 (rtI233V) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) polymerase was recently reported to cause decreased in vitro susceptibility to, and treatment failure of, adefovir dipivoxil (ADV). Abstract??Hepatitis B is one of the most important causes of chronic viral hepatitis world wide. Mutations in the precore region of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) genome are frequently found in hepatitis B envelope antigen-negative cases. Data from India on the HBV genotype-associated distribution...

Introduction. Few studies have evaluated the factors involved in the spontaneous HBsAg seroclearance in patients with chronic hepatitis B (HBV) followed up on a long-term basis from areas with a low prevalence of HBV infection. We aimed to determine the rate of spontaneous HBsAg seroclearance...
